Why would they advertise life insurance and cash-for-gold during kids cartoons?

I watched "Heathcliff" and "Inspector Gadget" on the "THIS Network" (broadcast channel 4.2 in Detroit), and they were advertising things like life insurance, cash-for-gold deals, and a few other things that would be of no interest to kids. What ever happened to advertising kids' cereals, toys, and McDonalds during cartoons?Why would they advertise life insurance and cash-for-gold during kids cartoons?
Well, parents obviously watch cartoons with their kids sometimes. So the commercials are aimed at the parents.Why would they advertise life insurance and cash-for-gold during kids cartoons?
