im sure they send them back to like their corporate office or something. then they are probably resold or they get destroyed.

They won't give it out. Sometimes a store might hand them out as a 'generic' toy. Generic toys are handed out in between toys when they're about to switch to other toys. You'd have to call around and find out what your store has at the moment. after the particular promotion is over, I'm sure they package all the remaining toys and ship them to a head office or something.

I don't know about McDonald's, but when I worked at Taco Bell we had boxes of kids meal toys in the back. We would sell the old toys to anyone who wanted them. Just ask them it can't hurt.
They keep them in a desk drawer, along with yesterday's meat that will become someone's Big Mac tomorrow.
